This stunning, vintage pedestal compote was made for the Shaw Savill Shipping Line which was founded in the mid-1800's with routes for packages and passengers between Great Britain and New Zealand. "Shaw Savill" is stamped on the top rim of the compote in its signature font. Circa 1930's.
We love the hefty weight to this piece - classic European hotel silver in its design for function aboard ship. It looks fabulous on a kitchen counter or island filled with apples or artichokes for an instant still life. For dessert time, we envision a stack of cookies such as large cloud-like meringues. We like to store pieces like this on open shelving in a kitchen or butler's pantry for its visual appeal.
The vintage offerings in our collection are restored and re-plated in pure silver in London for us by our longtime silversmiths. Even with restoration, some of the pieces may sport more patina than others due to their unique history and use which we think only adds to their character and allure.
