This Vintage 12" Oval Platter was crafted by Elkington Silversmiths for the grand dining hall of the prestigious Magdalen College at the University of Oxford in England.
The platter sports the name of the college on the top, rolled rim.
Magdalen, one of the premier-ranked colleges at Oxford, was founded in 1458 and is known for its high academic standing, history and architecture.
It's a true collectible serving piece of vintage European hotel silver - distinguished by its signature weight made to withstand daily use in the bustling university dining venue.
While designed for the college to serve side dishes on the long refectory tables of the grand dining hall, this size platter is the perfect size at home to serve cheese and crackers, hors d'oeuvres, a side dish, cookies, or a couple of cocktails or cups of tea.
When not in use for entertaining, we display our favorite vintage trays and platters upright against the kitchen or bar backsplash to add a touch of reflection and silver chic the the room.
The vintage offerings in our collection of European hotel silver and barware are restored and re-plated in pure silver in London by our longtime silversmiths. Even with restoration, some of the pieces may sport more patina than others due to their unique history and use which we think only adds to their character and allure.
