Vintage 16" Round Platter/Tray, Union-Castle Line

This exceptional Vintage Serving Platter, dating back to the 1930s, was crafted by the renowned British silversmiths Mappin & Webb for use aboard the luxury ocean liners of the Union-Castle Line.

The platter bears the distinctive crest of the British shipping company, which operated mail and passenger routes between Europe and Africa from 1900 to the 1970s.  A handsome, geometric Deco border frames the piece, lending it a sophisticated period character.

Generously sized, this platter evokes the glamour of ocean travel's golden age. One can easily imagine it presenting an elegant main course in a grand dining room or carrying chilled coupes of champagne through the liner's lounges as passengers enjoyed an evening of music and conversation.

It's a keepsake of maritime history and a striking piece of collectible vintage European hotel silver from a bygone era of elegant travel at sea.

Even with restoration, some of the pieces may sport more patina than others due to their unique history and use which we think only adds to their character and allure.
