Vintage Deco Sugar Bowl, P&O

This Vintage Deco Sugar Bowl, circa 1930's, was made by Elkington Silversmiths, renowned for their quality craftsmanship of silver-plated hotel serving ware for Europe's finest restaurants, hotels, railway companies, and luxury ocean liners.

This streamlined sugar bowl bears the initials "P&O" of the historic British Peninsular & Orient (P&O) Steam Navigation Company—widely regarded as the world's first cruise line. 

One can imagine a morning at sea: crisp white linens, attentive waiters serving tea and coffee from polished silver pots, and the gentle sounds of fine bone china and crystal as guests lingered over breakfast while crossing the ocean in timeless style.

Originally designed to be filled with lump sugar cubes, this oval bowl doubles as a chic vessel for garden roses cut down to size or fresh herbs. 

Rich in history and style, this sugar bowl is a coveted collectible piece of vintage European hotel silver -  a tangible reminder of the golden age of travel at sea.

The vintage offerings in our collection of European hotel silver and barware are restored and re-plated in pure silver in London by our longtime silversmiths. Even with restoration, some of the pieces may sport more patina than others due to their unique history and use which we think only adds to their character and allure.
