This pair of 1930's spoons was made by Mappin & Webb Silversmiths, known for their craftsmanship of quality European hotel silver for deluxe restaurants, hotels, tearooms, railways and ocean liners.
The streamlined, Deco handles of these spoons bear the initials "P&O" and were used for dessert service in the elegant dining rooms aboard the ocean liners of the Peninsular & Orient Navigation Company.
Established in the mid-19th Century, this British shipping line began with mail routes from England to India and East Asia. Later, P&O became one of the most glamorous ocean liner companies in the world.
While originally used for dessert, we reach for this size spoon for tasting while cooking and as serving spoons alongside dishes on a buffet when entertaining.
We acquired four pairs of these treasures - keepsakes of maritime history and the golden age of ocean travel.
The vintage offerings in our European hotel silver collection are restored and re-plated in pure silver in London for us by our longtime silversmiths. Even with restoration, some of the pieces may sport more patina than others due to their unique history and use which we think only adds to their character and allure.
